Common Scams & Fraud
Identity Theft

If someone gains access to your personal information, they can open accounts or make purchases in your name - often without you knowing until it's too late.

Phishing & Smishing

Scammers send fake emails or texts that look official, hoping you will click a link or share personal details they can exploit.

Emergency

Scammers create a sense of crisis - like a loved one in trouble - to pressure you into sending money quickly without verifying the story.

Impersonation

Scammers often pose as trusted companies, so always verify who you're talking to using official contact channels.

Online Shopping

Before buying through social media or marketplace listings, research the seller and watch for too-good-to-be-true prices.

Romance

If a new online relationship turns into requests for money, it's likely not love - it's a scam.

Common Scam & Fraud Questions

  • How do tech support scams work?

Scammers pretend your computer is infected, show fake errors or pop-ups, and convince you to give them remote access or pay for bogus fixes.

  • Can scammers pretend to be my family?

Yes. Voice-cloned scams frequently imitate family members asking for help with fake emergencies. A safe word system can help prevent this.

  • What about imposter scams from IRS or credit services?

These callers often spoof official numbers, threaten arrest or fines, and demand immediate payment. Real agencies never call demanding immediate payment via gift card or payment app.

  • What types of scams and fraud should I look out for?

People frequently encounter phishing, identity theft, tech support scams, investment and payment fraud, charity or emergency scams, and online shopping or overpayment scams. See our Common Scams & Fraud resource for more.

  • How can I tell if something might be a scam?

Look for red flags like unexpected requests, urgent threats, unorthodox payment methods (gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency), unfamiliar sender addresses or offers that seem "too good to be true".

  • What should I do if I think I've been scammed?

Immediately stop communication, preserve all evidence (emails, texts, logs), report it to Listerhill, the FTC (ReportFraud.ftc.gov), IC3 for internet crimes or your local law enforcement.

  • Is online banking safe despite scams?

Yes, but only if you protect your devices, always check for secure links, use strong passwords, and log out on shared/public devices.

  • What makes phishing emails so dangerous?

Phishing emails mimic legitimate organizations to trick you into sharing sensitive information or downloading malware. Scammers often use urgency, threats, or fake links to do it.

  • What's the deal with overpayment scams?

Scammers may "accidentally" send you more money than asked, only to ask for the excess back. Once the original payment bounces, you're out the extra money.

  • How do I verify if a nonprofit or charity is real?

If you receive an unsolicited donation request, look them up independently, avoid urgent donation pressure, and never send money via untraceable methods like cryptocurrency.

  • What should I know about scams targeting older adults?

Scammers often use family emergencies or tech threats to press older adults into payment. Encourage your loved ones to verify with you or Listerhill before sharing personal information or funds.

  • How can I protect myself from Identity Theft?

Monitor financial statements and credit reports regularly. Set fraud alerts/freezes with credit bureaus if anything suspicious appears.
