Protect Yourself from Holiday Scams: Tips to Stay Safe This Season

The holidays are a time for joy, generosity - and unfortunately, scammers.

Editorial Note: Articles published are intended to provide general information and educational content related to personal finance, banking, and credit union services. While we strive to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the information presented, it should not be considered as financial advice and may be revised as needed.

Each year, fraudsters take advantage of the hustle and bustle by launching schemes designed to steal your money, your identity, or both. At Listerhill Credit Union, we want to help you shop smarter, give safer, and stay protected during this busy time. Whether you're a member or not, these holiday scam prevention tips can help you keep your hard-earned money where it belongs.

Why Holiday Scams Spike

According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), consumers reported over 2.6 million fraud cases in 2023, with losses totaling $10 billion - a record high. The holiday season is especially risky, with online shopping, travel bookings, and charitable donations creating more opportunities for scammers to strike.

Fraudsters prey on urgency, emotion, and seasonal generosity. But with a little know-how, you can avoid becoming a target.

5 Holiday Scam Red Flags to Watch For

Rather than list every scam out there, focus on these warning signs common to most seasonal fraud:

1. Too-Good-to-Be-True Deals

An ad promises a $20 Apple Watch or $5 designer handbag - usually on a website you've never heard of. These are often fake storefronts designed to steal your credit card number.

Stay safe: Only shop on reputable sites and double-check URLs for subtle misspellings. Look for "https" in the address bar and research unfamiliar companies through the Better Business Bureau or Trustpilot.

2. Fake Shipping or Order Emails

Scammers send emails or texts claiming to be from FedEx, UPS, or Amazon. They may say your package couldn't be delivered or needs more info - then ask you to click a link.

Stay safe: Go directly to the retailer or shipping provider's website to track orders. Never click links from unknown senders.

3. Charity Scams

Fake charities pop up around the holidays, often using names that closely resemble real organizations.

Stay safe: Verify nonprofits on CharityNavigator.org or Give.org. Always initiate donations yourself - don't give via unsolicited emails or social media links.

4. Gift Card Grifts

Scammers may ask for payment in gift cards (often posing as a boss, grandchild, or tech support rep) or sell used/empty cards online.

Stay safe: Never use gift cards as payment. When buying gift cards, inspect the packaging and activation strip before purchase.

5. Fake Job Postings

Seasonal job scams promise quick cash but may ask you to "verify" personal information or pay upfront for training or supplies.

Stay safe: Apply directly through a company's official website. Be wary of job offers received via social media or messaging apps.

What to Do If You Think You've Been Scammed

Even the most careful shopper can slip up. If you think you've fallen for a scam:

  1. Stop communication with the suspected scammer.
  2. Report the scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
  3. Contact your bank or credit union immediately to freeze accounts, dispute charges, or change your credentials.
  4. Change passwords to any compromised accounts.
  5. Report identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov if you believe your personal data was stolen.

6 Ways to Avoid Holiday Scams

Here are simple steps to help keep your holiday season worry-free:

  • Monitor Your Accounts: Check your account activity regularly via online or mobile banking. Report any suspicious charges right away.
  • Enable Account Alerts: Get instant alerts for transactions, large withdrawals, or password changes.
  • Use Credit, Not Debit: Credit cards offer more fraud protection and make it easier to dispute unauthorized charges.
  • Don't Trust Urgent Messages: Whether it's a "limited-time offer" or a message saying a loved one is in trouble, take a breath. Scammers rely on emotional urgency.
  • Keep Software Updated: Make sure your phone, apps, and antivirus software are up to date to prevent malware.
  • Talk to Family: Scams target everyone - from teens on TikTok to grandparents on Facebook. Share what you've learned and protect your circle.
